Are You a Victim of Identity Theft?

equifaxIf you have a credit report, there’s a good chance you could be one of the 143 million American consumers whose personal information was exposed in the recent Equifax data breach.

What happened?  According to Equifax, the breach lasted from mid-May through July. The hackers were able to obtain people’s names, birth dates, addresses, Social Security numbers, in some instances, driver’s license numbers. Also stolen were credit card numbers for an estimated 209,000 people.

To help, the Federal Trade Commission has created a nice tool to work through the recovery process.  Go to: IdentityTheft.gov  (not to be confused with IdentityTheft.com or .org).

The site will walk you through a step-by-step approach to report and repair your damage. There are different paths depending on the type of identity theft you have been subjected to.

Everyone should review the site. Even if you are not currently a victim of identity theft, spend a few minutes reviewing the site. A review now can help you become more aware of the problem and help you understand what immediate steps you should take if this happens to you.
