Happy Anniversary to Third Hand Secretarial Service/Third Hand Bookkeeping Service.
Yes it is my 20th Anniversary as being a small business owner! I remember the day I traveled to the County Clerk’s office to register my business name and begin a new chapter of my life. I will not lie, I was nervous, scared, anxious but also excited – no one in my family was a small biz owner, I was charting on new ground. But I had a dream and vision and most of all the determination to provide administrative and bookkeeping services to other small business owners allowing them to focus on growing their business.
How it all started back in 1993, I had just found out that the company I was working for was being sold and all positions were being eliminated. Another job change in a matter of just a few short years – something that I was not accustomed to when I lived in another part of the state.
I must tell you that I always wanted to own my own company – an idea I had soon after I graduated from high school. Of course, at that time, there truly were not a lot of women holding management type positions in larger corporations, let alone running companies!
Not to bore you with all the details – after that announcement, I decided now was the best time for me to make this dream of mine come true. I did find another job and started Third Hand part-time. I placed an ad for typing services in our local newspaper and sent letters to companies that were profiled in our local paper to get the word out. It certainly did not take long for the phone to start ringing. Eventually, I resigned from the corporate world and I have never looked back!
Well here I am 20 years later, yes 20 years. Where did the time go? Today, I have a team of six bookkeepers and one awesome admin and so grateful that I have a team who share the same values and work ethic that I do. We all truly love what we do!
Since many of you are also small business owners, I don’t have to tell you about the hard work and long hours that we put into our businesses. They are truly our babies. The satisfaction I derive from owning my own business and my interaction with such inspirational entrepreneurs each and every day, such as you, has certainly fueled me. Owning a business is a continuous learning experience and I am always blocking time on my calendar to learn new resources and technology that will better serve my clients. Technology has drastically changed our lives over the last 20 years let alone just over a year ago, so it is important for me to keep up with these changes.
I look back over the last 20 years and boy my business certainly has changed, along with the services that I am now offer my clients. I became a Certified Bookkeeper 7 years ago, I had the pleasure of serving on the Board of Directors of the International Virtual Assistants Association, the premiere organization for virtual assistants. I also served two terms on the Board for the Delaware Valley Virtual Assistant Association – the DEVA’s. Have been to countless business conferences and traveled to places in the United States that I would not have had the opportunity to visit.
But, by far, the BEST support has come from YOU, my clients. I truly would not be here today without your continued support, your referrals and your never-ending confidence in the work that I am able to perform for you. I am truly blessed.
“Make it a habit to tell people thank you. To express your appreciation, sincerely and without the expectation of anything in return. Truly appreciate those around you, and you’ll soon find many others around you. Truly appreciate life, and you’ll find that you have more of it.” ~ Ralph Marston
