Mac Tip: Back up your iPhone or iPad using iTunes

iTunes backupYou are probably syncing your iPad and iPhone to iTunes but you may only be syncing music. What about all those contacts on your phone as well as notes, documents, and so much more.

There is a back-up function built in to iTunes which makes the process pretty simple. Use these steps to manually back up your iOS device using iTunes:

  • Connect your iOS device to a computer with the latest version of iTunes installed. Be sure you are using the latest version of iTunes. To verify, go to Help > Check for Updates.
  • Select your iOS device in iTunes under Devices
  • Right-click (or Control-click) the device and select Back Up

What is backed up (a partial list):

  • Contacts
  • App Store Application data including in-app purchases
  • Application settings, preferences and data including documents
  • Calendar accounts
  • Call history
  • Camera Roll
  • Game Center account
  • Home Screen arrangement
  • Keychain
  • Map bookmarks
  • Notes
  • Safari bookmarks
  • Messages
  • Voice memos
  • Wallpapers
  • YouTube bookmarks and history

iTunes stores the back up file ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
