Windows Tip of the Month: Hard Drive Maintenance

So…it’s the end of the year – time to clean up your hard drive. Cleaning up your hard drive will keep your Windows system working well. You should occasionally run the disk cleanup and disk defragmenter utilities. This also helps if you are short on hard drive space.

  1. Disk Cleanup – Go to Start – Programs – Accessories – System – Disk Cleanup. Your PC will run a diagnostic and list files that are safe to delete. You can actually see how much space each file is using, files such as temporary files, temporary Internet files, setup files, etc. You can safely delete anything from this list.
  2. Disk Defragmenter – Go to Start – Programs – Accessories – System – Disk Defragment. Depending on the age of your system and the condition of your files, this could take an hour or longer to complete.
