While we are on the subject of cleaning up our offices, I came across this article in the January/February 2008 issue of Home Business magazine. So my next trip will now be to the garden center!

Houseplants add more than beauty to a home office. They can also improve your health! NASA scientists discovered that some houseplants have air purification properties that help remove pollution. Top choices for home office houseplants include:

  • Spider plants: one of the best plants for removing formaldehyde from the air; spider plants need little water once they’ve finished growing
  • Mums: aside from producing bright, colorful flowers, mums have been found to reduce benzene in the air
  • Philodendrons: these popular, hardy plants can grow in a vine-like manner across doorways and arches, and they’re known to reduce air toxins
  • Gerbera Daisy: they prefer bright light, but these flowered plants also do an excellent job of filtering benzene from the air
  • Chinese Evergreen: if you don’t have a lot of sunlight in your office, this plant can survive in full shade and is a good choice for air purification.
