Tips/Links of the Month: Grammar Sites

Most of us each day writes a letter, sends an email, or perhaps even writes an article and almost always we come across those instances when we are just not sure if a comma should go there, a word should be hyphenated, or is “effect” or “affect” correct? These sites are great resources to help you find those answers. Maybe we should all subscribe to the daily “Word of the Day” to enhance our vocabulary.

Online Dictionary The Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary is based on the print version of Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, 10th Edition. This online dictionary includes the main A-Z listing, as well as the abbreviations, foreign words and phrases, biographical names, and geographical names sections of their printed dictionary. There is also an online Thesaurus available.

Proper Forms of Address – The Evergreen State University in Olympia, Washington has put together a small chart showing the proper forms of address and salutations to Federal and State Government Officials. Click here to view the chart.

The Acronym Finder – is a searchable database of more than two million abbreviations and acronyms on computers, technology, telecommunications, and the military. The Acronym Finder is not a glossary of terms, dictionary, or a thesaurus — it is only designed to search for and expand acronyms and abbreviations.

Quotations – The Quotations Page is an online quotation search engine where you can search quotes by subject or author. There are also biographies for more than 1,000 of their quoted authors. They recently added a “Your Quotations Page” where you can store your favorite quotes.
